What is wrong with civil unions?

Why are Christians so obsessed with homosexuality and gay marriage? - Beliefnet Forums:

"The problem I have with civil unions is the separate but equal issue. It is the old, gays are all right as long as they lock the bedroom door and exit the house by separate doors. If my life partner, in my case female, needs some help with the bureaucracy, I want to have the status of spouse so that I can climb all over the idiots behind the desk. That is why we got the marriage certificate and had the ceremony to celebrate it. We could have had the sex and the living together without all the hassle and fuss, but it would not have been marriage. That is what you are asking the gay's to do. No marriage, no respect for the partner. It is that simple."

There will be no "government sanctioned marriages" of same-sex partners until such time as 60+% of those voting in State and National elections disbelieve the myth of Sodom and Gommorah. When one lives according to a set of mythical hypotheticals concerning the behaviors that woul;d earn God's favor or bring down Herm's wrath, the fear of "pissing-off God," no matter how irrational it might appear to be, will continue to thwart any attempt to "legalize" same-sex marriages.

It should be noted that wherever "same-sex" unions can be formally acknowledged, without identifying such relationships as "legal marriages," both the goverment and private industries such as Insurance and large corporations have allowed for any "union" of two people to participate together financially and responsibly as if they were "married." The Ethical Principle of Equality has a line of demarcation between "children and adults" but has a fairly rigorous definition of "adult citizen" that condemns discriminatory behaviors by either the government or the public. Economically, such cities as Los Vegas and Atlantic City would likely embrace same-sex marriages as a potential and significant source of new revenue.

I don't think that pissing off God has anything to do with same sex marriage. It is a political power play to insert certain churches into the political arena. They have been defeated in the ID/Creationist intrusion into science classes, and homosexuals are the only minority left to hate. And make no mistake it takes hate to get out the vote of the sheeple.
